Globalization brings with it the need to know how to work effectively with people from different cultural backgrounds. This course will help students do just that. Culture has been defined as “the collective programming of the mind.” In some ways, understanding our own culture is like asking if a fish knows that it lives in water. This course uses specific tools to identify and compare significant components of culture related to doing business internationally. In the process of comparing cultures across these key dimensions, students will also have the opportunity to learn about how cultural norms in their home countries can affect doing business in a global economy.

Topics will include:
• Definition and measurement of culture;
• Cultural Intelligence;
• Cultural differences in human cognition;
• Stereotypes, prejudice, and ethnocentrism;
• Managing human resources across cultures;
• Communication across cultures;
• Leadership across cultures;
• Negotiation across cultures;
• Global corporate social responsibility;
• Cross-cultural business ethics.
