language English
duration 5 weeks

Central Europe, nestled at the crossroads of cultures and civilizations, has been shaped by centuries of conflicts and diverse ideologies, but also remarkable intellectual and artistic contributions. The four-week summer school is going to investigate its rich history and culture, from the medieval era to the tumultuous twentieth century. Each week will focus on one period with its most significant phenomena, processes, and events.

Week 1 will take you back to the Middle Ages, discussing the Christianization and the influences from East and West, the role of medieval religious institutions, and the impact of the Hussite movement.

Week 2 will explore the early modern times with the Reformation and the ensuing confessional clashes, witch-hunts, but also impressive works of Baroque art.

Week 3 will cover the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth, examining the rise of nations and empires, from the chaos of Napoleonic wars to the aftermath of World War I.

Week 4 will discuss the complexities of the twentieth century, including the emergence of totalitarian regimes, World War II and the Shoa, and the enduring Cold War tensions.

Throughout the four-week duration of the programme, a blend of lectures, readings, discussions, and excursions will be incorporated to enable a comprehensive and multifaceted comprehension of the region's history.
