In Latvia, due to historical and cultural habitat management and nature conservation traditions, one can find natural environments containing bryophytes, rarely found in other parts of Europe. Bryophytes are the oldest terrestrial plants, and unlike other plants, are adapted to live in various habitats and on different substrates. Besides being major peat formers, bryophytes are an important element in ecosystem functioning and important indicators of environmental quality. The summer school activities will consist of field excursions, microscopy, seminars, presentations.

Course aim

The aim of the course is to educate students from various countries and cultural backgrounds in bryophyte identification, ecology, conservation and practical use within a Latvian historical and cultural perspective through practical training in field trips and in the laboratory, and using exercises and lectures.
