In "Sound and More than: Research through Composition and Sound Art" students will embark on a captivating intellectual journey that fuses the realms of sound, storytelling, and ethnographic research. This level-5 course delves into the innovative intersection of qualitative research methods, sound art, and composition to investigate and represent multifaceted human experiences.

Students will be encouraged to adopt an interdisciplinary approach, drawing from the fields of anthropology, music, cultural studies, and beyond, as they work to construct meaningful, layered narratives that engage the senses, intellect, and emotions of their audience. Practical assignments will encourage students to use soundscapes, interviews, field recordings, and more as tools for crafting an ethnographic representations.

Course aim

By the end of the course, students will have a nuanced understanding of how sound and composition can illuminate the intricate tapestry of human experience, transforming ethnography into a multisensory, immersive journey.

GBP 2250: Tuition fee, includes application fee, 3-weeks of tuition, any field trip related to the course, full social programme, Southampton bus pass and a University of Southampton hoodie
GBP 1245: Optional accommodation fee includes 3-weeks accommodation in University of Southampton Halls of Residence, with breakfast everyday and dinner from Monday - Friday.
