TOAfrica Summer School offers participants an introductory overview of the African continent, with a focus on sub-Saharan regions. The 2024 edition focuses on the complex dynamics of South-South mobility and migration within and between African regions. Mobility routes within Africa also include movements between developing countries in the Global South. While traditional narratives emphasize migration from the Global South to the Global North, there is a growing recognition of the prominence of South-South migration in shaping economic development and knowledge transfer. Through a multidisciplinary approach and an international faculty with diverse backgrounds, the Summer School aims to provide students with an overview of the major scientific issues and debates on the topic.

Target group

The Summer School is designed for humanitarian professionals, students, and researchers. Applicants are preferably enrolled in a master's or doctoral degree program and are selected based on their academic and professional profile. Bachelor’s degree students will be considered in cases of excellence, as will applicants without a university degree but with an academic or professional background strongly related to sub-Saharan Africa. Six "FREETORINO" scholarships are available to cover participants' accommodation expenses. The scholarships will be awarded based on the consistency of the CV and motivation letter with the Summer School program.

Course aim

The TOAfrica Summer School offers Master’s students and professionals an introductory framework to the African continent with particular attention to the Sub-Saharan regions, that in recent years have undergone impressive changes: demographic and economic growth, fast urbanization, internal and external mobility, the development of digital technologies, artistic creativity, social, cultural and religious transformations, but also conflicts and environmental, health and political crises. A new landscape that has repositioned the continent in the global perspective, generating interest in international observers and investors.
