Wood Origami Workshop

when 1 October 2024 - 4 October 2024
language English
duration 1 week
fee EUR 100

WOWO is based on a learn-by-doing approach, offering students the opportunity to explore and experiment with origami geometry in designing self-supporting architectural surfaces using wood flat panels.
In this workshop, all trainers will design a self-supporting shelter, based on the rigid origami principles. Then they will construct a small-scale model using digital fabrication techniques and renewable materials.

Course leader

Filipa Osório
Tutors: Filipa Osório, João Sousa, Leonor Domingos.
Organisers: Filipa Osório, Leonor Domingos, Stefania Stellacci

Target group

Bachelor students, master students, young researchers, designers, professional/ junior Architects & Engineers

PREREQUISITES:
Required Equipment: Personal computer with Rhino and Grasshopper, computer knowledge at the user level
Required Skills: Proficiency in 2D drawing (AutoCAD) and/or 3D modelling (Rhinoceros 3D)

Course aim

The overall design process will be conducted using paper prototypes and parametric software (Rhino + Grasshopper) via two folding algorithms for Degrees 4 and 6 crease patterns. After open discussion sessions and prototype refinements, the generated geometries will be translated into digital fabrication. This process involves the exportation of the design of rigid and plan faces for construction purposes. In the final session the students will present their work for an engaging and entertaining discussion.
