Network and System Administration
This is a hands-on course in managing Linux server systems. There will be some lectures and demonstrations in the course, but the primary activity will be a series of guided practical projects in which you learn by doing.
Working alone or in small groups, you will set up a Linux system from the ground up. Not long after we begin, all of our machines will be able to connect to and communicate with one another. Gradually, your computer and the network will become more complex, and our collective site will offer more and more services to users. Along the way, you will encounter services that run as they should, and services that misbehave, and you will learn how to fix the latter. You will also learn to find and plug security holes before your system gets compromised.
This course is designed for people who want to understand how computers really work and who wants to be able to get computers ready for other people to use and keep them running smoothly every day.
Students are strongly recommend to have introductory knowledge of computer programming, in any language. It is also a plus if students have some experience with configuring a computer workstation (e.g., setting up anetwork) and/or using the command line (Linux or Windows).
The course is offered on a Pass/Fail basis, and assessment is based on completion of the various projects assigned during the course.
