Collage: Made & Ready Made

when 7 August 2016 - 19 August 2016
language English
duration 2 weeks
credits 3 ECTS
fee EUR 600

Experience an important technique employed by the Bauhaus! Experiment with different materials and create your own artwork and art objects!

In their works on paper and objects, the surrealists used the techniques of collage („Papiers Collés") and assemblage that both make use of chance and play to achieve paradoxical combinations and surprising results.

In this course you will learn how to use existing materials for your own purpose (such as pictures from magazines and advertising, old photographs or fabrics), composing them in new and playful ways. By using appropriation you will create your own unique and singular art works.

During the second week of the course, source materials will also include found objects. We will discuss terms such as „Objet Trouvé“ and „Readymade“ processes where everyday objects are transformed and thus separated from their original purpose and inherent functionality. Here, making art leads from finding to innovating.

In addition, topics and exercises will be provided on a daily basis to serve as sources of inspiration. However your own ideas and inputs are also very welcome.

The course offers an art historic overview of collage, from its beginnings and particularly throughout the Bauhaus period. We will visit the Bauhaus museum and talk about Bauhaus artists and their works. Later you will learn how to adopt these new impulses within your own studio practice. You will also learn about important contemporary artists who make use of collage in their work.

By the end of the course, each student will have created ten works: five collages and five sculptural assemblages. They can be used for applications for art schools or architecture and design courses. As part of the outcome, you will learn how to adequately curate and present your works within a self-organised, final group exhibition.
