In this Summer School, students receive an introduction to established and cutting-edge methods and processes of product innovation and development design methodology and product lifecycle management.
Theory taught in the lecture will be applied in hands-on workshops featuring the analysis and improvement of a real life product. Students will learn how to carry out market research, identify and evaluate requirements, set up functions and their structures and to derive and vary concepts for product innovations. These concepts will be transferred into a suitable embodiment design using conventional and agile methods including rapid prototyping technologies.

Course leader

The RWTH International Academy works closely together with the International Office and the Institute for Engineering Design (ikt) of the RWTH Aachen University to offer a perfect mix of technical study and cultural experience.

Target group

You are a B.Sc./B.E. student enrolled at a renowned university and you are studying mechanical engineering or a related field. Desirable is the completion of the first year and basic knowledge in engineering design.

Please note: The minimum age to participate is 18 years.

An English language proficiency test is recommended.

Since the programme is taught in English, you need to bring sufficient academic English language skills to be able to follow the course.

Course aim

The programme is based on the following pillars:

I. Excellent Science and Research in Systematic Product Innovation

Students will be exposed to such topics as the principles of product innovations, product design and construction, machine design, and cooperative product development.

II. German Language and Culture
Through the university’s “BeBuddy” programme, international students have the chance to immerse themselves in the vibrant student community at RWTH Aachen University. Participants will get to know Aachen from a true student’s perspective: They learn more about academic and cultural practices in Germany with the support of their German “Buddy” who is typically a student enrolled at the RWTH Aachen University and can so offer first-hand experiences in and around the campus, painting an authentic picture of university life.

III. Social Events - Have fun while studying!

The RWTH International Academy offers an extensive support programme next to the academic courses in which participants meet like-minded people from around the world. All students from our different summer school programmes are invited to take part in sporting or dancing events, cooking nights and get-togethers with students from various international Master’s programmes. There is a wide offer of intercultural activities and excursions in and around Aachen – enjoy your stay!
Being in the heart of Europe, summer school students will also have the opportunity to explore Aachen’s surrounding area – be it other German cities close-by such as the former German capital Bonn, Düsseldorf and Cologne or the European diversity in cities like Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam.

Fee info

EUR 1800: The course fees include all lectures, laboratory courses and excursions, social events, accommodation, breakfast and lunch on weekdays, all meals during social events and a public transport ticket for the respective time.

Early Bird Discount: complete your application until 1 March to get a 10% discount on the total fees - in case of admission!
