language English
duration 1 week
credits 3 EC
fee EUR 400

EarthBiAs2018 is organised by the School of Sciences of the University of the Aegean, in collaboration with Global Network for Environmental Science and Technology (GNEST). It will be held in Rhodes from 3rd of September to 7th of September 2018.

This is the 4th year the EarthBiAs Summer School is running and following the successful events in previous years, the programme covers a wide range of topics including Machine Learning, Data Science and Deep Learning using Big Data technologies. Courses are offered for participants with a background in mathematics, statistics, data science, software engineering, environmental modelling etc. All lectures are lab-based, presented by academics and industry professionals with deep experience in Big Data and Artificial Intelligence systems. The last day of the Summer-School, a hackathon event will be organised. In this challenge, participants and lecturers will be split into teams to prototype the solution of an analytical problem.

The topics covered by the Summer School are:
• Big Data frameworks (Spark, TensorFlow)
• Machine Learning on environmental data
• Data management and feature engineering using R and Python
• Deep Learning models on environmental time series data

Courses will be offered in various ways, including lectures, tutorials, collaborative workshops and round table discussions.

The team of Summer School instructors has a long track in academic training, industrial research projects and scientific publications in the areas of Big Data Analysis and Simulation of Environmental Systems. This may lead to the publication of scientific papers and the writing of innovative project proposals, with the participants/students.

Target group

The Summer School program is planned to attract students, researchers and professionals from the fields of Natural Sciences, Engineering, Computer Science and Information and Communication Technology.

Course aim

In this new era of data-intensive systems and increasing demand for evidence-based decisions/actions upon critical societal challenges, it is more than essential to build new curricula shaping the future BIG DATA experts. New value chains of OPEN, LINKED and BIG DATA management, analysis and processing have been created, in order for businesses and public administrations to exploit this new potential. Consequently, reformation and restructure of business processes in both domains have evolved in the creation of new positions striving out for data scientists or to be more precise BIG DATA experts.
