Chinese Language and Cultural Awareness for Business
Mandarin Chinese is the world’s most widely spoken language. As China’s development progresses, its engagement with the rest of the World, both inside and outside China, continues to increase. There is now a greater need than ever for individuals or businesses to have an appreciation of Chinese language and culture. This applies whether they are visiting China or experiencing an increase in Chinese visitors or businesses.
This module provides an introduction to contemporary Chinese language and culture. You will have the opportunity to develop your Chinese language and skills and intercultural awareness. You will also explore the importance of Chinese language to building business relationships in China or in a host country.
The module includes a field trip to two businesses in the Leeds area. You will learn how firms have adopted an understanding of Chinese language and culture in their every-day business. Watch this video to learn more about the relevance of Chinese language and culture in a UK business context.
The module provides an introduction to contemporary Chinese language and culture. On completion of the module, students will be able to show an appreciation of key elements of Chinese language and culture which are important to effective communication in business settings. They will know some basic Mandarin words and phrases that will help them to communicate with Chinese people in China or abroad.
The module is worth 10 Leeds credits = 5 ECTS. You can transfer the credits earned back to your home degree subject to approval.
