Digital Interactive Smart Spaces
Thanks to the advances of the Internet of Things, the increasingly low cost of sensors and actuators, the improved network connectivity, the availability of software components and tools to support application development, our environment is increasingly enriched with digital devices that waive themselves into the fabric of our physical space and objects. Forecasts suggest that by 2030 around 50 billion of IoT devices will be in use around the world, creating a massive web of interconnected 'things' that are making our spaces 'smart', i.e., responsive and adaptive to the user’s behavior and to the change of environmental properties, enabling new interactive applications to empower users and the quality of their life in many different fields.
The format consists of a mix of lectures, case studies presentation, demos in real smart spaces installations; autonomous and supervised teamwork on project design and business planning; and team-building activities.
Week 1 - Villa Grumello (Como Lake)
Lectures: Technologies for SSs; Interaction Modes in SSs; Methods for UX design & evaluation; Smart Spaces applications; Industry case studies;
Project teamwork (focused on Requirements analysis+Concept design)
Social Event (Cruise on the Como Lake)
Week 2 - Politecnico di Milano (Milano)
Lectures on: Industry case studies; I&E perspectives for SSs; Pitch creation SS demos (trip to SS installations)
Project work (UX+Technology, Design; Biz plan; Pitch Preparation) Project Final Presentation
The academic speakers are Professors and Researchers from Politecnico di Milano and from top-level research institutions in Europe, USA; and Israel, industry speakers from national and international start-ups and companies.
The Summer School is devoted to Ms/Ph.D. students, researchers, and professionals who want to
i) deepen their knowledge on Smart Spaces technology and its potential/limitations;
ii) to improve their competence on interaction design for Smart Spaces and explore how applications can be developed to maximize usability, accessibility, and eﬀectiveness;
iii) better understand the business opportunities in this arena and the social challenges involved.
Attendants will build competencies and skills that will enable them to become innovators in the field of Smart Spaces, as designers, developers, academic researchers, or business managers in start-ups or larger companies.
This Summer School addresses the challenges of this scenario from a technological, methodological, societal, and business perspective. It provides a comprehensive view of all aspects related to Smart Spaces: technologies for Smart Spaces development (hardware devices, middlewares, communication architectures, software frameworks); interaction paradigms (e.g., gestures, touch, eye gaze, voice, tangible manipulation), and UX evaluation methods; application domains (e.g., home/work automation, automotive, culture, health, and well-being, education, entertainment); business challenges and entrepreneurship opportunities; ethical, sociological and psychological aspects of Smart Spaces.
Acceptance of transfer credit is always a decision of receiving institutions. Any student interested in transferring 4 ECTS credits to another college or university should check directly with the receiving institution.
