The global burden of Mental Health is large and continuously growing. Many persistent somatic health problems are affected/ accompanied by persisting psychological conditions such as depression, stress and anxiety. This course focuses on the interaction between exercise and distress, anxiety, depression and Medically Unexplained Physical Symptoms (MUPS). There is strong evidence on how people benefit from exercise both physically and mentally. You will acquire high clinical decision making- and treatment skills. We will focus on multiprofessional cooperation and innovation strategies.

This summer school program is specially set up for students from various fields, such as: medicine, psychology, nursing studies, human movement studies and allied healthcare professionals, including physical therapy and occupational therapy.

The challenge

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) the global burden of Mental Health is large and continues to grow. Health systems throughout the world are aiming to respond adequately to people with mental health problems. Many persistent somatic health problems are affected or accompanied by persisting psychological conditions such as depression, stress, anxiety and so on. In order to understand this and to be able to provide tailor made treatments we need a holistic (bio-psycho-social) approach.

Content

This summer course focuses on the interaction between exercise and distress, anxiety, depression and Medically Unexplained Physical Symptoms (MUPS).

How will this summer school support you?

During this 2 week program we will look at rehabilitation and mental health from every angle. We respond to World Health Organization’s call for action to promote, protect and restore mental health. We have chosen exercise as a key intervention. There is a lot of evidence on how people benefit from exercise both physically and mentally. Moreover, exercise is free and has no side effects.

The course consists of two parts: an online part and a two week course on location. The online course is a sneak preview. It is compulsory to do it, in order to enter the course. Get inspired by going through it.

If you decide to enlist for the summer school, you will transfer theory into practice. Together with peers and experts from the field you will acquire high clinical decision making- and treatment skills. You will acquire experience and skills on using exercise as a treatment method, when it comes to facing your clients’ mental health problems. Needless to say we use the latest evidence, as well as the experts opinion. We also bring in the client!

In our case based learning lessons, we combine theory, skills and experience to solve a series of real life clinical cases.

We will focus on multiprofessional coöperation and innovation strategies to be able to set up tailor made rehabilitation program in mental health in your own country.

Course aim

Upon completion, you will be capable of: • assessing mental health problems. • determining appropriate rehabilitation interventions: running therapy, breathing- and relaxation, psycho motor therapy, mindful exercise. • designing a scientifically based mental health rehabilitation program using exercise as a key intervention • managing (integrated physical and mental) health rehabilitation by supporting colleagues and sharing knowledge in interdisciplinary consultation • establishing a multiprofessional network and enhancing interprofessional collaboration by innovative strategies

Fee info

EUR 950: 950 for professionals, both foreign and Dutch. Foreign students and non-HU students receive a €300 discount. HU students receive a €900 discount.
