language English
duration 1 week
credits 1.5 EC
fee EUR 300

This course focuses on analysis of outdoor movements in space and transport network-based distances. The objective is to provide students with insight in the principles of sense making of GPS Data in a GIS environment. Collection of travel/movement data is nowadays made easy through the use of GPS-loggers and Smartphones. This course aims to collect, clean and enrich these datasets with GIS by combining locational data with existing land use and transport datasets.

Possible applications lie in the research domains of zoology, transport geography, health sciences, logistics, etc. Topics covered are refreshing knowledge of ArcGIS 10.4, Use of smartphone Tracking Apps and GPS-loggers, importing into ArcGIS and projecting of GPS data, matching of GPS data with land use maps and transport network maps in ArcGIS, introduction to special software tool Flowmap 7.4.2, data conversion to Flowmap, data cleaning and route reconstruction with Flowmap, data and result presentation in ArcGIS.

The objective of the course is to provide students with insight in the principles of sense making of GPS Data in a GIS environment. Specific objectives to the coarse are to provide insights and training in:

- Tracking with Smartphone GPS-App or GPS-logger
- Import and Projection of GPS data in a GIS environment
- Application of Time Slider Tool / Tracking Annalist in ArcGIS
- Identification of Activity Locations and Travel Diary reconstruction with GIS tools
