when 19 August 2024 - 23 August 2024
language English
duration 1 week
credits 3 EC
fee EUR 500

Take a deep dive into the multifaceted phenomenon of miracles in the Christian tradition. Through a hands-on approach to texts, objects, and images at one of the heritage libraries in the historic city of Antwerp, you will discover the rich complexity of the history of miracles and learn about both their religious significance as well as challenges related to conservation and heritage management.

Through different thematic foci, this annual summer school explores central aspects of Christian heritage.

The topics covered will range from movable heritage (visual and applied art, liturgical objects...) to immovable heritage (churches, monasteries, cathedrals...), and intangible heritage (customs, rituals, practices, beliefs, traditions, knowledge, etc.).

Through lectures but also a ‘hands-on' approach to written and printed sources, objects, images, and site visits, students will acquire insight not only into the complexity of the history of Christian beliefs and practices, but also challenges and questions related to its conservation and management.
