This two-part course address biomedical informatics and biomedical engineering. This introductory course will cover the basic biomedical informatics (BMI) concepts, the historical context of the discipline, the differences between all of its subareas (Medical Informatics, Bioinformatics, Biomedical Engineering, etc.), data management in biomedicine, and the use of Artificial Intelligence methods and techniques in biomedical applications. We will then concentrate on an specific topic which has recently been given more focus: Biomedical Informatics Retrieval (BIR). We will learn what is BIR and why is it important in healthcare and industry. We will also revisit the most widely employed models for BIR, and students will create and deploy a simple but complete BIR model containing clinical and/or genomic data. Biomedical Engineering deals with innovation in biomedical technologies, especially trends in the development of new devices or solutions that solve specific unmet needs.
