Introduction to Data Access and Management

when 17 February 2013 - 22 February 2013
duration 1 week

Within the last years there has been a tremendous increase of available data on the Internet. Governmental and corporate open access data initiatives provide accurate information which are highly valuable for researchers. In this course we will concentrate on tools for utilizing and managing such data from various sources. This includes data access, i.e., how to get data provided in the Internet into a database management system (either stand-alone, like PostgreSQL, or integrated into an application, like SQLite), and data management. For the latter we will employ the Structured Query Language, the defacto standard of working with structured data. Furthermore, we will show how to access data sources on the Internet which are based on semi-structured data (like XML) and Linked Open Data.
