Security of Things

online course
when 24 August 2020 - 4 September 2020
language English
duration 2 weeks
credits 2 EC

The Internet of Things (IoT) and Smart Homes represent a rapidly growing market in which many providers are striving early and ruthlessly for large market shares due to the network effect. In the resulting economic situation, it is virtually natural that "hardly any time remained" for technical and organizational security. This concerns both the architecture of applications with an almost hopelessly unmanageable number of responsibilities and trust boundaries and the security of the protocols used themselves. Even in the field of industrial automation and the field buses used there, security was not seen as a primary design goal.
The participants receive a free experimental environment and free access to all teaching units and workshops. There is a great social programme to get to know each other.

Course leader

A team of experts (scientists and young researchers from Rostock University and partners) offers online courses on current topics of security in buildings.

Target group

Students, PhD candidates and professionals in the field of computer science, civil engineering, facility management or simliar areas with knowledge in computer science and network security

Course aim

The Internet of Things (IoT) and Smart Homes represent a rapidly growing market in which many providers are striving early and ruthlessly for large market shares due to the network effect. In the resulting economic situation, it is virtually natural that "hardly any time remained" for technical and organizational security. This concerns both the architecture of applications with an almost hopelessly unmanageable number of responsibilities and trust boundaries and the security of the protocols used themselves. Even in the field of industrial automation and the field buses used there, security was not seen as a primary design goal.
This summer school is aimed at all those who are interested in safety mechanisms in fieldbuses and IoT systems. We show in detail what the insecurity is, which attacks are possible, which protective measures would be technically and organizationally conceivable and how companies and law enforcement officers approach these problems.
