Scholars have alerted that the decision-making power of algorithms may cause severe social impacts, defined by the increase of “algorithmic injustices” and the intensification of “surveillance capitalism.” Furthermore, attention has been raised to the fact that algorithms are not only problematic due to their direct societal impacts, e.g. the creation of biased facial recognition AI, but also in how it is originates from large-scale data sets based on precarious or unpaid labor. This has led to the emergence of the field of “critical algorithm studies,” which centers attention on the social and political aspects of algorithms in society.
