The Summer School course “Japan’s Self Defence Forces: Soldiers of Peace?” is offered in partnership with The Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

The summer school will cover aspects of the Self Defence Forces (SDF) in Japan. The SDF is a particularly interesting case among global militaries. After being defeated by the Allies, Japan adopted a constitution in 1947 that deprived the country the right to use force as means to settle international disputes. This has greatly impacted its operations as well as the public’s view of the SDF. In fact, the SDF has not fired a single shot in a combat since it was established in 1954. Therefore, can we talk about the SDF as a “peaceful” army? Moreover, how does the SDF provide national security and contribute to global stability?
