The COVID-19 pandemic clearly shows that we are living in a constantly evolving world. It also highlights that an interdisciplinary approach is critically needed to prevent and control infectious diseases. Such an approach includes knowledge and understanding of disease mechanisms and transmission at many different levels such as, the origin (e.g. zoonosis) and nature of a pathogen, how the immune system responds to and control infections, why some people are more affected than others, how new treatment options and vaccines are being developed, which factors affect transmission in the population, and finally what measures are used to curb infections and surveil or predict transmission of these pathogens. During this course you will be introduced to many of these aspects and will appreciate that only through an interdisciplinary coordinated approach can pandemics be controlled and prevented in the future.
