In the midst of a global pandemic a school was formed in the Tuscan countryside - Chianti. Leading contemporary Italian architecture collectives were invited together to form the faculty of the school : The Possibility of an Island.

Emerging from this moment of unprecedented isolation there was an impulse and desire to work together again. The practice and methodology that collective practice embodies resonated with the energy and works that the school aimed to produce. Moving away from the architect as a single individual to instead a practice of multiplicity and inclusion.

Together with a group of young international participants each collective put forward a design brief that addressed the spatial quality of temporality and transition. Producing new tools, practices and rituals that reflect on this particular moment in time. The resulting works are temporary architectures that disappear following the two week school.

This year we will be producing toolkits in the form of video essays and photographs that design strategies of adaptation in times of drastic change.

A nightly public program of guests featuring events, lectures, performances and celebrations. With special guests such as Gian Piero Frassinelli - Superstudio, Elettra Fiumi - Radical Landscapes - Gruppo 9999 revival, Metahaven, Ludwig Engel and many more !

Course leader

Sofia Pia Belenky

Target group

The programme is open to current architecture and design students, PhD candidates and young professionals. Software Requirements: Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro, comfort in filming and 3d modeling are suggested.

Course aim

Together we will produce several 10 minute films - four different islands - that will respond to an existing extreme condition of the present through the practice of storytelling. Participants of the workshop will work together with collective practices (Fosbury Architecture, Plasticity, Parasite 2.0 and Interiors Agency) to write a script and storyboard, build a 1:1 scale set, and film a series of performative and temporary architectures that will produce a collective survival kit towards the future. Together with guest experts - a daily public program of lectures, performance, music, dance, and filmmaking will bring in new voices and ideas into each film. We will work collectively as we develop new modes in inhabitation from the scale of body to planetary scale.
