The Russian Invasion in Ukraine and the Future of European Security
The year 2022 marked a watershed for European security. The Russian invasion in Ukraine has led most European states to fundamentally reconsider their security and defence policies. But how sustainable is this Zeitenwende in European security? Will European states keep on track of the paths they have taken recently? Will Germany give up its reluctant role and turn into a leader in European security affairs? What is France’s vision for European security as a traditional military power and, together with Great Britain, the only nuclear power in Europe? What are the aspirations of Poland that has decided to invest heavily in its security policy and that
some already see as “Europe’s coming military superpower” (Politico)? And in which format will they work together? Will the Atlantic Alliance, branded as “braindead” by French President Emmanuel Macron only a few years ago, remain the main multilateral security forum or will Europeans finally become more independent from the US? Can the Weimar Triangle format have an added value in this context and of what kind could this added value be? And how does this all fit into the wider international security order with a growing rivalry between the US and China as its main shaping factor? How will Russia’s position evolve? Will it remain a rogue state or will it return into the international community? And what about Europe’s role in its Southern Neighborhood? Will the EU wind down its engagement in the Middle East and Africa to focus on the East?
The Summer School will take an inside look at all these questions and will provide participants with an overview over the fundamental changes taking place in the European security architecture today.
