Data Analytics Ethics
The purpose of the course is to build student capacity to recognize, assess—and have a toolbox for responding—to ethical issues and the human and societal impacts of contemporary use of ‘big data.’ By the end of the course students will have developed ability and skills:
to understand contemporary challenges in privacy and consent;
to recognize/identify new and emerging ethical issues in common human practice, e.g., health, education, social media, etc.;
to conduct comparative analysis of data regulatory systems, using Europe and the U.S. as examples, and to know how to access and update this information as systems adjust;
to prepare application to an Institutional Review Board for ethics approval of research using human or animal subjects;
to recognize and bring to professional contexts the career value of actively engaging ethical thinking throughout data life-cycles; and,
to contribute to interdisciplinary research and projects.
