The Classics of French Literature | No.1
This cycle of conferences offers a journey through the major works of French literature, to discover or rediscover emblematic texts, basics of common culture. In particular, we discuss the works that made an impact when created as well as their aftermath. We thus examine what makes a classic, by considering the various ways in which literary productions play with aesthetic codes and fashion models - from the Renaissance to the contemporary period. Each conference tackles a particular period of French literature and analyzes two works.
The sixteenth century: from Ronsard to Agrippa d'Aubigné
The seventeenth century: from Malherbe to La Fontaine
The eighteenth century: from Voltaire to Sade
The nineteenth century: from Balzac to Zola
The twentieth and twenty-first centuries: from André Gide to Michel Houellebecq
