In this Summer School, students receive an introduction to the engineering, controlling and programming of robots. The course conveys necessary theoretical knowledge in robotics, followed by lab courses where you can apply the gained knowledge in hands-on practical projects.

The program offers an overview of the application of intelligent, robust robots as part of future smart factories. The lecture comprises three segments covering the central topics of communication between heterogeneous systems, adaptive industrial robotics, and autonomous mobile robotics for in-factory logistics.

Course leader

The RWTH International Academy works closely together with the International Office, the Language Center of the RWTH Aachen University and the Institute Cluster IMA/ZLW & IfU and Knowledge-Based System Group.

Target group

You are a B.Sc./B.E. student enrolled at a renowned university, have profound knowledge of the English language and are studying mechanical engineering or a related field.

Desirable is the completion of the first year as well as basic knowledge in the following areas: Lecture „Artificial Intelligence“ (or objective evidence of equivalent knowledge), programming skills (C++ and/or Java), interest in logic-based programming. Linux skills are beneficial.

The minimum age to participate is 18 years. Students should have completed the first year of studies.

Please note:

An English language proficiency test is recommended.

Since the program is taught in English you need to bring sufficient academic English language skills to be able to follow the course.

Course aim

The program is based on the following pillars:

I. Excellent Science and Research in Robotics

Students will be exposed to topics such as OPC UA, DDS and other communication standards in modern industrial applications, as well as the state of the art in behavior generation both for stationary industrial as well as autonomous mobile groups of robots. Topics dicussed and tested will be:

Smart Factory Intra-Logistics and Robotics
Communication between heterogeneous Systems
Advanced Software Engineering and Development
Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Robotics
The joint Aachen team "Carologistics" from the RWTH Aachen Univesity and the Aachen University of Applied Sciences, won the RoboCup Logistics League in China in 2015 - so you can be sure to be exposed to the latest research and development in the field during your summer stay in Aachen.

II. German Language and Culture
Through the university’s “BeBuddy” program, international students have the chance to immerse themselves in the vibrant student community at RWTH Aachen University. Participants will get to know Aachen from a true student’s perspective: They learn more about academic and cultural practices in Germany with the support of their German “Buddy” who is typically a student enrolled at the RWTH Aachen University and can so offer first-hand experiences in and around the campus, painting an authentic picture of university life.

III. Social Events - Have fun while studying!

The RWTH International Academy offers an extensive support program next to the academic courses in which participants meet like-minded people from around the world. All students from our different summer school programs are invited to take part in sporting or dancing events, cooking nights and get-togethers with students from various international Master’s programs. There is a wide offer of intercultural activities and excursions in and around Aachen – enjoy your stay!
Being in the heart of Europe, summer school students will also have the opportunity to explore Aachen’s surrounding area – be it other German cities close-by such as the former German capital Bonn, Düsseldorf and Cologne or the European diversity in cities like Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam.

2, 3 or 4 ECTS credits according to the workload (about 60 hours / 2 weeks, about 90 hours / 3 weeks and about 120 hours / 4 weeks)

Fee info

EUR 2990: The course fees include all lectures, laboratory courses and excursions, social events, accommodation, breakfast, lunch, all meals during social events and a public transport ticket for the respective time.
