Nurses Work, Nursing Management and Clinical Leadership
Healthcare organizations are difficult to manage. Different logics and value systems are at play. Leadership and management is of importance when aiming on ensuring high quality patient care, employee satisfaction and overall organizational effectiveness . This is particularly so for front line nurse managers; they are the key interface between care, cure and managerial control as they are ?close to the action?. At most nursing schools leadership and management are not in the core of the curriculum. This is understandable, the main focus is on training nurses, not managers or leaders. Nevertheless we believe that addressing management and leadership in an early phase of your professional career as a (student) nurse helps creating better healthcare organizations and improve the quality of care of our patients.
You will work closely together with other nurse students form different countries on topics such as (clinical) leadership [related to issues like palliative care, healthy aging etc.), professionalization, having influence in daily practice, intercultural nursing, management of complex organizations, process management etc.. We will have lab sessions working on different cases in subgroups and visit a hospital, hospice and nursing home. We collaborate with the other summerschool courses given by HU University of Applied Sciences.

Gaining insight in your own potential as nurse leader is one of the aims of the course. Establishing a professional network and learning from other healthcare systems are also key. After attending all the workshops, lectures and excursions you will be tested on the last Thursday of the course. A full day group assessment game will help you successfully round off the course, showing your potential as a future nurse leader and the lessons learned from the entire course.
