The new Dutch protestant hymnal Liedboek - Zingen en bidden in huis en kerk (2013) contains a wealth of musical and liturgical materials. This wealth poses a challenge to ministers, church workers, and church musicians alike, as it needs to be accessed in a knowledeable and responsible way. This course offers a unique opportunity to enhance one?s knowledge of the Liedboek and to engage with the musical and liturgical opportunities that it provides.
This year?s course focuses on the opportunities the Liedboek offers for the ?Liturgy of Hours?: vespers, choral evensong, Taiz? and Iona services, Gregorian chant. By doing so, both practical aspects of the use of the Liedboek (what materials are being offered, how can they be used) and more theological, spiritual and theoretical aspects of this hymnal can be addressed.
The course is taught by a number of experts, which will include members of the editorial board of the Liedboek, lecturers in liturgy and church music, and experts in conducting a variety of services of the ?Liturgy of Hours.? A varied program of lectures, seminars, workshops, and musical sessions makes this summer school an attractive and engaging opportunity for all interested in the ?Liturgy of Hours.? The course participants will also participate actively in a service of vespers and Choral Evensong. In this way, theory and practice are combined.
The course is suitable for those who already have a working knowledge of the Liedboek, but also for those to whom it is yet new and unknown. This includes ministers, pastoral assistants, and church musicians.
