Take a historical journey illuminating Ostrava and the heart of Europe from the Middle Age to the end of the 20th century, giving you a unique perspective on the many technical, social, historical, religious and cultural factors that shaped the modern Czech Republic and Europe as a whole. With Ostrava as a starting point, this course will give you an opportunity to truly “step into the history” and a vantage point to understanding this part of the world. Many museums, former coal mines, metallurgical steelworks, and many other technical monuments of Ostrava will offer you same of the most breath-taking highlights for the Czech industrial heritage, history and culture. The course includes a full day excursion.


- Industrial heritage and technical monuments of Ostrava
- Tradition and modernity (one-day excursion: e.g. 13th century Štramberk tower, etc.)
- People and the city (music festivals, literature, theatre)

Course aim

One week program combines academic courses with excursions, and also social and cultural program. Ostrava´s rich cultural heritage, especially industrial heritage will help you in understanding modernization within Europe.
