This course is an introduction to German and is aimed at beginners. Within four weeks, this course will help you to develop basic competencies in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in German, as well as give you a basic knowledge of the German culture, and that of Berlin in particular.

Course components

1. Attendance and Homework (30%)

Each class session consists of four modules. It is simply not possible to make satisfactory progress in this or any language course without thorough preparation for class and punctual submission of assignments. Because productive and constructive participation is an integral part of learning a foreign language, it is absolutely necessary that you attend class regularly.

2. Essay and Journal (20%)

You will compose and revise one essay on a given topic. Throughout the term, you will also compose various journal entries to reflect on certain aspects of your stay in Berlin.

3. Midterm and Final Exam (20%)

You will take a midterm and final exam based on course material, consisting of sections on listening and comprehension, vocabulary and grammar, reading comprehension, and composition.

4. Oral Presentation and Group Project (20%)

You will be asked to prepare a short presentation and speak freely about an assigned topic. You will also work with peers on a creative presentation about your impressions of Berlin.

5. Excursion (10%)

On one course day during the term you will go on a course-related excursion and take an excursion-related quiz.

Target group

This course is an introduction to German and is aimed at beginners -CEFR German level A1.
The target group includes current university students who have completed at least one year of their studies (Bachelor's, Master's or PhD level). Working professionals with equivalent work experience are also welcome to apply.

Course aim

The primary goal of language instruction should be the development of communication. To achieve this, you must engage in as many communicative situations as possible, and the course is designed to provide you with ample opportunities in the classroom and on a course-related excursion to do so.

The course follows the standards of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) for level A1 (beginners with no prior knowledge). Equal emphasis will be given to five language skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and culture.

At the end of the course, you will

- be able to deal with everyday situations in a German-speaking environment and conduct simple conversations (e.g. at the grocery store, in a restaurant, at a public office)
- be able to understand discussions on familiar topics
- have developed reading strategies that allow you to understand simple newspaper articles as well as short
literary texts
- have learned how to write, revise, and proofread short texts in German

Credits info

5 EC
5 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) for the academic course. 7 ECTS if booked along with the optional Start German: Language Course. 8 ECTS if booked along with the optional Managing Innovations, Arduino for Interactive Media or the DesignBuild - Community Spaces with Refugees course.

Fee info

EUR 950: The fee covers public transportation for the duration of the course, excursions, course materials, and a cultural program.
