Case Study II

when 6 August 2018 - 10 August 2018
language English
duration 1 week
credits 2 EC
fee USD 300

This course provides participants with a set of methodological
tools that enable them to use case study methods in pursuit of
causal inference. We focus on the strengths and limitations of
different small-n methods aimed at establishing causality. We
study the types and scope of inference that are possible with these
methods. The second week of the sequence explores forms of
within-case methods of causal inference, including the congruence
method and process tracing. We also examine the use of
counterfactuals and historical analysis within case study research.
Typological theory is introduced as a way to explore the variety of
actual and possible cases for use with theory testing. We conclude
with an exploration of case study research embedded in mixed
methods designs
