Europeans and Asian Empires: Encounters on the Threshold of Modernity

About

The aim of this course is to present the history of the relations of European states and trading companies with the great empires of Asia, from the first missions at the beginning of the 16th century to the great projects of imperial incorporation in the 19th and 20th centuries. We will see how a hegemonic Ottoman Empire, which knew how to attract the talents of Sephardic refugees (1492) and which was characterized by an efficient multi-ethnic organization, fell behind its European neighbors and which, with the reforms of Ataturk, abolished the institution of the caliphate itself (1924)
