**Under 18s**

Today computers can perform many tasks that have been until recently been the sole domain of humans. From
Language translation, object recognition, music composition, financial market trading, these are just a few examples of task that computers can perform using a technique called machine learning. These task that have also been for a long time though to be the sole domain of humans and are (almost) impossible to achieve using traditional approaches to computing.

The course will begin with a short introduction to machine learning: What is machine learning. Where and why does it perform better than traditional techniques. What can computers learn. Later we will also discuss things like supervised and unsupervised learning and discuss the parallels to human learning. Additionally, we will talk about what is and how to recognise a good solution when the computer finds one.

Next, we will teach a computer to recognise hand written numbers and attempt to make the computer more accurate than the average human. We will discuss different approaches to the problem and students will write their own code.
In the final part of the course the students will be given a choice whether to focus on more theoretical aspects of machine learning, or whether we will for example teach a computer to translate text from French to English.
No prior knowledge of mathematic and programming is required. Students are required to bring their own computer. In case that is not an option for you please mention that in your application and we will find a solution.
