About

This course focuses on the application of GIS Tools to analyze of outdoor movements of people or animals. The objective is to provide students with insight in the principles of sense making of GPS Data in a GIS environment. Collection of travel/movement data is nowadays made easy through the use of GPS-loggers and Smartphones. This course focusses to how to collect, clean and enrich these datasets with GIS by combining locational data with existing land use and transport datasets.

Due to the nature of this course presence in Utrecht is required. This course will only be taught in a physical setting.

The objective of the course is to provide students with insight in the principles of sense making of GPS Data in a GIS environment. Possible applications lie in the research domains of zoology, transport geography, health sciences, logistics, etc. Topics covered are

Refreshing the knowledge of ArcGIS 10.8 (or ArcGIS Pro)
Use of smartphone Tracking Apps and GPS-loggers
Importing into ArcGIS and projecting and visualization of GPS data in combination with Base Maps
Identification of ‘stop’ and ‘move’ sections in GPS data with GIS
Georeferencing of GPS data with GIS
Matching of GPS data with land use maps and transport network maps in ArcGIS,

Target group

The course is designed for Master students, PhD students, academics that what to visualise and/or analyse data of human or animal movements collected with GPS.

Course aim

The objective of the course is to provide students with insight in the principles of sense making of GPS Data in a GIS environment.

Specific objectives of the course are to provide insights and training in:

Tracking with Smartphone GPS-App or GPS-logger;
Application of Time Slider Tool / Tracking Analist in ArcGIS;
Identification of Activity Locations and Travel Diary reconstruction with GIS tools;
Route reconstruction with GIS tools.
