Experience the highlights of Dutch art from the last 400 years at first hand! This track covers many of the country's most renowned artists, museums and cities. Discover the famous masters of the Golden Age of Dutch Art. Examine Dutch art from the 18th and 19th century, up to the early decades of modernism, including artists such as Van Gogh and Mondrian. This track will tell you all about the masterpieces and its painters by taking you out of the classroom and into cities, museums and churches – you will not be able to get closer to the masterpieces themselves!

The first two weeks will cover the Golden Age of Dutch Art, the early modern period, when the tiny Dutch Republic grew to an internationally flourishing metropole. Discover why the Golden Age of Dutch Art was so unique, through its marvelous history, paintings, applied arts and architecture.

The last two weeks will take you through Dutch art from Van Gogh to Mondrian, from the 18th and 19th century and up to the early decades of modernism. Modern Dutch artists started to strive for the elusive ideal of truthfulness in their own way. Not only will you learn about the famous artists of this period, as Van Gogh and Mondrian, after completing this course you will also be able to recognize this periods main art movements.

The course is open to participants (graduates and non-graduates) from all disciplines with a keen interest in Art History.

Course aim

This course gives students a broad overview of Dutch Art from the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th century, until the 1920's through the exploration of history, culture, daily life, academic approaches, excursions and case-studies.
