Does Mind Matter? Mind, Matter and Quantum Mechanics
This course aims to convey to general participants’, in simple but accurate terms, how the realistically interpreted quantum mechanics works, with emphasis on the potential impact of this science-based understanding of ourselves on the meaningfulness of our lives, and on our bringing into being that which we positively value. According to the quantum mechanical understanding of reality, the same laws that were introduced initially to rationalize the empirical findings in the domain of atomic and particle physics also explain how mental intentions can affect body actions in the way that a person mentally intends.
General recognition of this intellectual transformation of science’s image of the man from mechanical automaton to “free” agent constitutes a contribution of science to today’s troubled world that in the end could be far more critical than its engineering contributions. For how we utilize our scientific knowledge depends on our values, and our values depend on our self-image.
