The aim of this course is to enable students to expand their theoretical and empirical understanding of the relation of society to education in the present socio-historical conditions.

In particular, the course will be a macro-sociological examination of the current state of education systems, nationally and internationally. As the world is coming out of a devastating pandemic, it becomes crucial to understand the socio-historical conditions that made it possible as well as those that are being formed in its aftermath. It is also important to understand how these conditions are presentified in the function of education systems, and the very purpose of education.

The course will be theorization, analysis, and critical examination of selected themes regarding the relation of society to education that are particularly prominent in our times.

Its first sessions will employ socialization theory, in order to establish the embeddedness of the individual, education, as all institutions, in the present socio-historical context.
