For the 9th year, the University of Latvia in collaboration with the Latvian Language Agency organizes "Summer School of Latvian Language and Culture" for students and others interested in learning and enhancing their Latvian language skills, as well as expanding their knowledge of Latvian history, art and folklore.

In 2023 the summer school is planned to be held live in Riga.

We offer:
 intensive, modern and interactive Latvian language course
 afternoon discussions on Latvian history and politics
 afternoon discussions on Latvian culture and art
 afternoon discussions on Latvian folklore: customs and traditions
 guided tours of Riga and the Ethnographic Open-Air Museum of Latvia
 excursion to the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia and the Kr. Barons Memorial
Museum, in Rainis and Aspazija House-Museum in Riga;
 one day guided tour to Cēsis (palace of Cēsis, old town);
 one day guided tour to Kuldiga (Venta rapid, old city).

Target group

Attendees who want to learn and improve their Latvian language skills and expand their knowledge of Latvian history, art, and folklore. The students who study the Latvian Language or other Baltic languages at their home universities are particularly encouraged to apply.

Course aim

The study programme enables students to learn the Latvian language or to enhance their existing language skills and intercultural awareness and sensitivity. The programme is designed to be interactive and allows to practise newly acquired knowledge and skills. The cultural activities and excursions are planned to supplement classwork and to introduce participants to the rich diversity of the geographical, linguistic, and cultural areas of Latvia.
