This class will look at the origins of street art, the main artists who made this movement prominent, and the up-and-coming artists of now. During this course, students will understand the street art movement, be able to recognize its main techniques and styles and analyze its impact in the society.

Course content

Part 1: What is street art? When did it appear? How did we slide from an illegal practice in the street to the world of museums and galleries, and all the way to the top of the art market? Artistic expressions coming from the street have become more and more popular through the last decade.

Part 2: What are their techniques? How did they evolve through time? Are there different categories of street artists?

Part 3: Impact of the market on street art practices and the apparent contradiction between the illegal and temporary essence of street art and the long-term presence of the artworks in the market and in institutions.

Part 4: Preparation of few visits in Paris, seeing the art in-situ, seeing where it comes from, and meeting some artists
