The Human Digital Twin Summer School Barcelona

when 3 June 2024 - 7 June 2024
language English
duration 1 week
credits 4 EC
fee EUR 150

Digital Twins in health are promising technologies to improve preventive, personalized and proactive healthcare. They are particularly relevant for noncommunicable diseases (NCD) and disorders that evolve subclinically over long periods of time, before becoming symptomatic and mostly irreversible. On the one hand, the burden of NCD is increasing worldwide. On the other hand, more than 60% of the most disabling and life-threatening diseases and disorders are NCD that involve mechanical load-bearing tissues and organs.
The summer school is research-inspired as it looks toward the future. It shall be attended on-site at UPF. It includes research presentations in basic clinical and biological research, and digital technologies, in health. Talks are given by international experts and 15 to 30 min time is left to discussion with the students chaired by an expert professor of the teaching team. The Summer School further proposes different tracks of guided hands-ons. Each student chooses a hands-on track and follows a focused training of 15 hours (3-4 h per day). In each hands-on track, a group of students work collaboratively, led by an expert researcher. The students are introduced to a specific health problem, and to a digital technology that might help to tackle this problem. During the hands-on, they work on the implementation of the technology. They identify the challenges, strengths, and pitfalls. They eventually obtain results and are guided through the proper critical interpretation of these results, in the light of the methodological approximations, limitations and context of use. They shall eventually build up clear take-home messages, according to the problem to be tackled and the working hypotheses that have followed.
