Genetics: Working with DNA
Genetics as one of the exiting fields of science plays an important role with studies regarding the mechanisms of unknown reasons of several diseases. As we are living in an era of technological wonders, medical and science students participated in this summer program will have the opportunity to work with the latest innovative instruments to detect and diagnose various diseases. So in this line, the course is designed in two parts which will provide students the opportunity to learn not only the theoretical part of the course but also apply the practical part in our laboratories. Since network and collaboration are the key elements of scientific and health community, we believe that together we will be the pioneers of raising individuals who can settle to the changing health conditions as well as solve problems, be collaborative and productive, have teamwork facilities, and most importantly raise the awareness to value the individual health.
Course leader
Lect. Arta FEJZULLAHU
Target group
Requirements: Basic Genetics and Computer Skills
Who can participate: Medical School, Genetic Engineering, Faculty of Science and Letters (Molecular Biology and Genetics, Medical Genetics, Human Genetics, Neuroscience, Biochemistry, Chemistry) Students
Special Event: Laboratory Applications
Participation Limit: 10 Students
Course aim
The course aims to give a general understanding of basic principles of medical genetics and teach students the current applications operated in molecular genetics research field. During the course, the concept of medical genetics and its connections with human diseases will be covered systematically from the central dogma "DNA-RNA-PROTEIN", and then generalizing with the recent applications used in the diagnosis of various human diseases. The course is designed in two parts which will provide students the opportunity to learn not only the theoretical part of the course but also apply the practical part in our laboratories by using DNA Isolation Procedures, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), Agarose Gel Electrophoresis, Sequencing and Bioinformatics Tools.
