The Learning Analytics (LA) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education summer course will address the principles of LA and AI, discuss the practical issues, the main foundational principles, and the theoretical background behind LA and AI. The course will introduce real-life examples with real data and authentic scenarios and tools, where the attendees will practice with hands-on analysis supported by the teachers of both analytics and building of AI rich applications and tools.
Students will use AI to build learning and assessment resources, analyze data, automate feedback, and augment explainable AI. Attendees will be able to design AI tools like custom pedagogical chatbots, learning and teaching agents, analyze data with AI tools, and automate teachers' work with AI tools. Interested educational researchers will also learn how to use AI to automate tasks, such as qualitatively coding discourse data, processing information from large numbers of documents, or batch evaluating data.
The course will also introduce tools and methods to train the attendees on using LA for analysis. For instance, attendees will use network analysis to analyze learning processes, practice sequence analysis to trace how learning unfolds, or apply explainable AI to understand students in need of help. Students will practice these methods on a variety of datasets stemming from different learning environments, such as learning management systems, collaborative learning platforms, or AI chatbots. The students are welcome to use their own data to practice the learned methods as well. Besides acquiring state-of-the-art analytical skills, students will learn how to gain insights from their findings, and they will be able to discuss them in a supportive environment.
The courseβs main goal will be building studentsβ knowledge and skills with an emphasis on hands-on practice with real-life data, tools, and methods. Most importantly, the knowledge and skills acquired in the course can be easily transferable to other fields in which analytics and AI are relevant. The course does not require prior background knowledge. It has been taught for 6 years, over 11 editions, to participants from diverse academic and professional backgrounds. To accommodate this diversity, the course progresses from basic concepts to advanced applications and uses accessible tools and methods that support a wide range of skills and project levels.
The instructors have vast experience in the field with over 250 publications, two LA+AI methodological books, and have experience in running 11 editions of the same course with students from over 40 countries and all the six continents of the world.
