Dive into Sicily’s marine and coastal ecosystems through hands-on field studies. Explore Mediterranean marine biodiversity and gain unique insight into the real-world challenges of human–nature coexistence.
You’ll use the Plemmirio Marine Protected Area as your primary open-air laboratory.

Mediterranean Conflict: Humans & the Environment
- 3-week session

Marine & Coastal Ecology
- 6-week session
- 4 credits | 60 contact hours

Course aim

This course aims to provide students with an in-depth understanding of Sicily's unique ecosystems, biodiversity, and the interplay between human activity and the natural environment. Through immersive fieldwork and interdisciplinary study, participants will explore the region’s marine and terrestrial habitats, gaining practical skills in ecological research and sustainability. Students will also develop actionable insights into climate adaptation and regeneration, equipping them to address global environmental challenges within the context of a dynamic Mediterranean setting.
