Climate Smart Agriculture: Sustainable Transition in Agri-Food Systems

About

Agricultural ecosystems are central to global policy agendas, as they are closely linked to climate change,
environmental degradation, biodiversity loss, and global population growth—both as part of the problem
and as part of the solution. New strategies are needed for the transition of agricultural systems at the global
scale. Climate Smart Agriculture offers a framework for technological innovation of agricultural systems
promoting solutions that reconcile food security with environmental, social, and economic sustainability in
contexts increasingly shaped by climate change. It pursues three main objectives:
- Increase or maintain productivity and yield.
- Enhance resilience to environmental changes.
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The Summer School “Climate Smart Agriculture: Sustainable Transition in agri-food systems” aims to
provide students with foundational knowledge of Climate Smart Agriculture concepts and practices. It will
cover a range of topics, including Carbon farming, greenhouse gas (GHG) monitoring and mitigation,
precision agriculture for sustainable agriculture, and agroecological transition, while also offering a preview
of the subjects explored in depth within the Master’s Degree program in Sustainable Agriculture at the
University of Padova.
The Summer School, led by faculty from the Master’s Degree program in Sustainable Agriculture and
distinguished international scholars, will offer a rich program of lectures, discussions, workshops, and field
trips designed to foster networking and collaboration. By promoting the exchange of diverse ideas and
experiences, it aims to inspire partnerships among the next generation of agronomists.
