London and literature go hand in hand, and this module will provide you with a critical understanding of the relationship between the city and the literature it has inspired. In particular, you’ll analyse contrasting perspectives on the remarkable social and cultural diversity of London: from Shakespeare’s and Dickens’s depictions of class conflict to the celebration of modern multiculturalism in the writings of authors such as Selvon, Ali and Smith. Through studying landmark texts from the city’s literary history, you'll discover how authors have interpreted and recorded the complex interplay of political, economic and cultural forces that have made London into, in Addison’s phrase, the ‘aggregate of various nations’ that we inhabit today
