About

Whether you are considering studying psychology or are simply interested in the complexities of the human mind, this programme offers an accessible and engaging introduction to the field of psychology.

Over the course of two weeks, students will learn the fundamentals of psychology and explore the topic of mental health in today’s fast-paced society. The programme encourages students to think critically about how factors such as technology, sleep, and memory shape mental health, and to reflect on what it means to maintain balance and resilience in the modern world.

Through a mix of lectures, discussions, and interactive activities, students will experience psychology as an academic discipline and a way of understanding human behaviour across diverse contexts. Inspiring guest lectures from experts in academia and professional practice will provide diverse perspectives on contemporary questions about mental health.

Hosted by the University of Amsterdam, this programme allows high school students to experience studying in an international and supportive academic environment. All lectures and course materials are in English. Participants will develop valuable academic and critical thinking skills that prepare them for future university studies in psychology or related fields

Course leader

Liza Keessen (MSc) is a doctoral researcher at the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences at the University of Amsterdam. Her current research focuses on how young adults can experience mental calm in an increasingly hyperconnected world. She has taught a range of undergraduate courses at the College of Psychology, from research methods to substantive courses. In the Pre-University Summer Programme, she draws on her interdisciplinary background, having obtained an MSc in Psychology (Research), specializing in both Clinical Psychology and Brain and Cognition, and a BSc in Communication Science. She is fascinated by psychology not only as a field of scientific inquiry, but also as a source of insight into ourselves and the world around us
