About

This course examines how development cooperation is evolving amid shifting geopolitics, shrinking budgets, changing aid structures, and digital innovation. Building on over seventy years of practice and debate, it analyzes current global trends and explores the emerging rationales, approaches, and actors shaping the future of international cooperation

Master, PhD, Postdoc, Professional.

The ability to express oneself clearly in spoken English is an essential condition for participation in this course. Since the setup of the course is interactive, a genuine interest in the topic of the course is conditional

Course aim

Knowledge & understanding
1. Explain the historical evolution of international development cooperation and identify key turning points over the past seventy years.
2. Describe contemporary academic debates on development cooperation, including shifts in geopolitics, aid architectures, and digital innovation.
3. Recognize the roles and interactions of different actors in development cooperation, including states, NGOs, international organizations, and private-sector actors.

Application & analysis
1. Analyze how global political and economic trends reshape development cooperation policies and practices.
2. Critically assess policy and practice perspectives on development cooperation, drawing on insights from guest speakers and case examples.
3. Apply theoretical frameworks to evaluate current and emerging models of international cooperation.

Reflection & future orientation
1. Reflect on possible futures of international cooperation and formulate informed perspectives on the changing rationales, modalities, and actors in the field
