Paris in Literature

About

This course offers an engaging journey through the literary history of Paris, from the 16th to the 20th century. By exploring key texts and authors, it traces how the city has been portrayed and reimagined across time, reflecting major cultural, social, and artistic transformations. From classical representations to the rise of modern urban experience, students will discover how Paris becomes a central character in literature. Particular focus will be given to the theme of Paris as β€œa vast desert of men,” from Rousseau to Baudelaire, as well as selected insights into 20th-century literary perspectives.

The Sorbonne Summer University is open to anyone aged 16 or over who wants to learn something new or improve their knowledge (minors must have parental permission). The course cycles are preferably aimed at people with a minimum of two years’ higher education.

For all courses in French, the expected level proficiency is B1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. However, no proof is required.
