Theater, from Page to Stage

About

This course explores the dynamic relationship between dramatic texts and their performance on stage. Through a range of case studies, from classical French theater to modern drama, students will examine how plays come to life in performance. The course combines theoretical reflection with practical insight, including the experience of the Théâtre Molière Sorbonne, an introduction to commedia dell’arte, and the study of theatrical life during the classical period in France. It also looks at adaptations across genres, such as Pygmalion and My Fair Lady, and engages with modern theatrical innovation through Beckett’s Endgame. Together, these perspectives invite students to reflect on the unique experience of theater as both text and spectacle.

Target group

The Sorbonne Summer University is open to anyone aged 16 or over who wants to learn something new or improve their knowledge (minors must have parental permission). The course cycles are preferably aimed at people with a minimum of two years’ higher education.

For all courses in French, the expected level proficiency is B1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. However, no proof is required.
