This course explores how crime has shaped cultural imagination and social anxieties in France from the Belle Époque to the 20th century. Through figures like Fantômas and Lupin, media coverage, literature, theater, and cinema, it examines how crime is represented, staged, and sometimes concealed. Together, these perspectives reveal how narratives of crime reflect deeper fears, values, and tensions within society.
The Sorbonne Summer University is open to anyone aged 16 or over who wants to learn something new or improve their knowledge (minors must have parental permission). The course cycles are preferably aimed at people with a minimum of two years’ higher education.
For all courses in French, the expected level proficiency is B1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. However, no proof is required.
